Translucent textures with Knussen

“Oliver Knussen's translucent and stirring Symphony No 3 is the featured work for "Our Classical Century", starting off a sequence of music which reflects its luminous tuned percussion textures as well as embracing the seasonal holiday weather. Tchaikovsky's Sugar Plumb Fairy employs a similar sound world to Knussen but with a very different style, as does Leroy Anderson's joyous Bugler's Holiday. Other music in the mix includes a poignant piano piece by Frank Bridge, a lyrical French fantasy and folk music arrangements from the pastures of the Auvergne and rural England.
