Eleanor Oldroyd's Paris Olympics Classical Mixtape

Episode m00213ls, broadcast at Friday 26th July 2024, 7:00pm.

“30 minutes of back to back classical music chosen by Radio 5 Live presenter Eleanor Oldroyd, inspired by the Paris Olympics. Her choices include an Olympic Fanfare by John Williams, Ravel's Bolero, made famous by the Winter Olympic skating champions Torvill and Dean, and Eric Satie's playful take on playing tennis and running races. Places associated with the Olympics also feature in the music, including Much Wenlock and Barcelona, with music by Vaughan Williams and Freddie Mercury, and the place where it all started in Greece, as depicted by Vivaldi in his opera "L'Olimpiade". Alongside these sporting musical gems are Michael Torke's airborne "Javelin" and music by Josef Suk, which won a medal in the Cultural Olympiad of LA in 1932. And of course, any Olympic themed music sequence would not be complete without the remembered image of all those young athletes in white, running along the beach to the music of Vangelis in the film "Chariots of Fire". Producer: Helen Garrison”
